Two New Programs Announced!!

February 14, 2014 By Tap Legacy

2014-02-14 New Program Announcment

In celebration of Gregory Hines’ Birthday, and the founding of the Tap Legacy Foundation (both February 14th), the foundation is happy to announce two brand new programs. The Tap Legacy Ambassadors Program and the Gregory Hines Story Archive showcase a new focus for Tap Legacy programming. Together these new programs will connect and engage the foundation more fully with the people it serves while continuing to promote the oral tradition and history of tap dance.

About the Tap Legacy Ambassadors Program

The Tap Legacy Foundation has always recognized the importance of people, especially within the context of an oral history. However, it is also people that support the spread of ideas and the continuation of an oral tradition. The Tap Legacy Ambassadors Program provides an opportunity for tap dance enthusiasts all over the world to become an integral part in the promotion and celebration of the history of tap dance. Ambassadors will also play a key role in laying the foundation for the building of the Tap Legacy Center by spreading the ideas upon which the center will stand. Built on these four tenets: Join the Family; Spread the Word; Promote the Legacy; Advance the Art. The Ambassadors Program will ensure that those keen on promoting the legacy of tap dance are provided with the resources they need to do so.

About the Gregory Hines Story Archive

Gregory Hines’ contribution to the field of tap dance are innumerable. While Hines’ artistry is well recognized, his impact on people has had less of a public platform while being equally as important. The Gregory Hines Story Archive provides a public platform through which individuals may submit stories of personal encounters with Hines. The collection of stories will serve as a  reflection of Hines’ unique character and broad impact on those he crossed paths with. Stories submitted will be included in the Tap Legacy Digital Archive, while a curated selection of stories will be posted on GregoryHines.org on an ongoing basis.

On February 10, 2014 Shirley Temple Black made her final exit. U.S. Ambassador, Hollywood Child Star and forever ‘America’s Little Darling,’ Shirley Temple Black peacefully passed away at her Woodside, California home from natural causes, at the age of 85. She was surrounded by her family and caregivers.

Born on April 23, 1928, Black’s career in film began in 1931 and spanned 30 years, during which Black starred in 14 short films, 43 feature films, and over 25 storybook movies. Singing, dancing, and acting, Black co-starred with Bill “Bojangles” Robinson in The Little Colonel (1935), The Littlest Rebel (1935), Just Around the Corner (1938) and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1938).

Following her astounding film career Black would go on to serve in a series of diplomatic posts including U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Ghana, U.S. Delegate to the 24th General Assembly of the United Nations, and U.S. Ambassador to the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic. She advocated for young peoples health issues, breast cancer early detection and treatment, and environmental-quality issues.

Awards include the Life Achievement Award from Screen Actors Guild (2006), the Kennedy Center Honors (1998), and a special Juvenile Academy Award presented by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for Black’s work in film in 1934.

Contributions in Shirley Temple Black’s memory may be made to the commonwealth club of California’s 2nd Century Campaign or to the Education Center at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles. A REMEMBRANCE GUESTBOOK is available at SHIRLEYTEMPLE.COM, and you can see Shirley Temple Black’s early film work by visiting Tap Legacy’s YOUTUBE Playlist for Shirley Temple.

Our hearts go out to the Black family as we reflect on Shirley Temple Black’s contributions.

One In A Million Holiday Campaign

November 6, 2010 By Tap Legacy

We’re still at it. And we won’t quite until we break ground.

In 2009 the Tap Legacy Foundation launched the One In A Million Campaign, a capital campaign to fund the building of the Tap Legacy Cultural Center in New York City, as envisioned by our co-founders Gregory Hines and Andrew J. Nemr. The campaign continues and is a great gift for the tap dance lover in your life.

Do you know someone who cares about tap dancing? How about someone who has enjoyed a tap dance show recently or remembers those years when tap dance was a part of the popular culture of America?

Become One In a Million in their honor, and give them the gift of a uniquely numbered memento to commemorate their involvement in this historic campaign. Their name will be listed on the Tap Legacy Million List, presently online, and in the greeting area of the proposed Tap Legacy Center.

A total donation of $95 (includes shipping and handling fees) makes you One In A Million. You can make the donation as a single payment or over time (we keep track of the total for you!). To become One In A Million in time for the winter holidays simply donate $1.50 a day and you will by One In A Million by December!!

We need your support to continue to promote the history of Tap Dance in all its unique splendor and to as broad an audience as possible.
