Oral Traditions work through the apprenticeship model. This provides intimate access to the tradition through a personal relationship with a teacher.

Mission

To Preserve and Advance the Art of Tap Dance

Core Values

We aim to continually work towards the embodiment and fulfillment of these values.

  1. Every member of our community should have access to all the information, collected materials, and stories that informs the understanding of our tradition’s history.
  2. Every member of our community should be rightfully recognized and credited for their contribution, be it small or large, in the areas of production, performance, education, documentation, and preservation.
  3. Tap Dance is part of a large family of percussive dance expressions. Any curation that we institute is designed to focus our interest around tap dance and related American vernacular dances, and not to exclude the fundamental relationship between all human expressions or percussive dances.

Who is Tap Legacy?

The Tap Legacy Foundation was established by Gregory Hines, Andrew Nemr, and Joseph Nemr. Before launching its first program the foundation requested and received the support of Honorary Board members representing the living oral tradition of Tap Dance at the time. Now part of the Nemr Institute, Tap Legacy™ continues its mission, supporting the oral tradition of tap dance and sharing its learnings for the support of oral traditions around the world.
