A New Resource – The List

May 9, 2018 By Tap Legacy

One of the ways oral traditions are explored is through the people involved. Finding old stories, making connections, watching video recordings, all comes back to the people and their names.

Who’s in the story, who used to dance with who, and who are we watching right now. Knowing the names of the people can help us on our individual explorations of the tradition. For instance, looking through the index of biographies of jazz greats for the names of tap dancers may yield unique stories not found elsewhere. But, we need the names that we should be looking for first.

To that end we are excited to announce a new resource. A community sourced list of tap dancers, individuals and acts, listed in alphabetical order. We envision this list of contributors both large and small, to be a living document that will continue to grow as contributors are remembered, discovered, and newly recognized.

Visit the List here and submit a name using the form at the bottom of the page.

We’re Building a Map!

September 7, 2016 By Tap Legacy

CottonClubGirls_72

A few weeks ago you may have seen this announcement on our Facebook page or twitter feed. If you missed it, the Tap Legacy™ Foundation was awarded a grant from the Awesome Without Borders chapter of the Awesome Foundation. That’s a lot of awesome. Thanks to their support we’re developing a new special resource for the tap dance community: We’re building a map!

This isn’t your ordinary map. We’re partnering with Traces, and using the same technology that powers Pokemon Go, to bring the rich history of New York City to life. Imagine walking through the city when you receive a notification that you’re in the vicinity of tap dance history, literally. You follow directions to the exact location and once you arrive are able to explore stories, pictures, or videos, that highlight the historical significance of where you are standing.

Tap dance has long been a part of New York City’s geography, an integral part of the jazz and theatre scenes. Over time, though, much tap dance’s amazing history has been lost amidst NYC’s ever-changing cultural landscape. Now we can bring some of it back to life for everyone to experience!

Call to Action

We’re asking members of our community to submit important locations that you feel should be included in the map. We don’t want to miss anything! These locations could be rehearsal halls, venues that hosted tap jams, theaters and night clubs historically important to tap dance, or other important locations.

Use this form to submit a location.

Happy National Tap Dance Day!!!

May 25, 2014 By Tap Legacy

TLF-Slides-NTDD-LAUNCH

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of National Tap Dance Day, a legislation passed by the United States Congress in 1989. We are happy to celebrate this special occasion with two special announcements.

Leading up to Tap Dance Day, Tap Legacy launched a Thunderclap Campaign in an attempt to get #tapdance to trend. We did it! We reached our campaign goal of more than 500 supporters and with them will have sent #tapdance to more than 1.6 million connections. This is the first social media celebration to celebrate Tap Dance Day and we’re so thankful for everyone who joined to make it a great success!

Today we are also very pleased to launch a site dedicated to Tap Dance Day, now a global phenomenon. The site includes the full text of the original legislation that established National Tap Dance Day as law, as well as a recounting of how the legislation came to be.

We’re always glad to have a reason to celebrate this art form that we all love. Happy 25th National #TapDance Day!!!
