Did you know that the First Tap Dance challenge scene took place in the 1984 film The Cotton Club.

The film is about the famous 1930’s Harlem Jazz Club The Cotton Club. The story follows the people that visited the club, those that ran it, and is peppered with the Jazz music that made it so famous.

The film was directed by Francis Ford Coppola, Choreographed by Henry LeTang and starred Richard Gere, Gregory Hines, Bob Hoskins, Larry Fishburne, Nicholas Cage among others.

To all dancers, dance enthusiasts and tap dancers, please join us in celebrating the Birthday of James Stump Cross today 06/20/1919.

A Tap Master and National Treasure.

James Stump Cross and Eddie Stumpy Hartman were the duo dance, Comedy and acting team of Stump and Stumpy popular from the mid 1930s to the 1950s, Harold Cromer took over the Stumpy role in the late 40’s.

[Daily Post] Stump and Stumpy

Arthur James Stump Cross and Eddie Stumpy Hartman were the duo dance, Comedy and acting team of Stump & Stumpy.

later on Harold Cromer took over the Stumpy role.

The act was popular from the 1930’s to the 1950’s. They toured the Black Vaudeville circuit with acts such as Buck and Bubbles, The Nicholas Brothers and Duke Ellington.

It became well known that many white comedians would come to see their act and try to perfect their own, including Jerry Lewis and Mel Brooks. Eventually the Stump & Stumpy act moved to bigger and better shows including appearances in Las Vegas with Frank Sinatra.

Cross, Hartman & Cromer have Films, Shorts, Recordings, Broadway and Archival Footage to their names.
